Traffic Management Operations

The Port operates a 24-hour Vessel Traffic Service known as Larne Port Control (LPC) to monitor ship activities, tide and weather information within the port and provide timely information or warning concerning traffic movements and possible hazardous conditions.

To enable LPC to fulfil its duties the port has installed a modern VTS system including a TRANSAS tracking sytem, 2 radars remote from the VTS centre, 2 VHF Sailor units and a CCTV system. This equipment allows LPC to record ship movements, communications and significant events within the controlling area.

The VTS is manned by Marine Officers who are trained and certificated to the latest IALA standards of V103/1 and consequently Larne Port Control makes a significant contribution towards maintaining the safety of life at sea and ensuring efficiency of navigation and the protection of the environment.
