Meso 2005 Visit to the Port of Larne

Thursday 1 September 2005

Archaeologists Visit the Port of Larne

The Port of Larne hosted a site visit for over 200 archaeologists last Thursday. The Ulster Museum arranged the visit in conjunction with the port as part of the Meso 2005 conference in Belfast, a gathering of mesolitic experts from throughout Europe and around the world,

The delegates visited Curran Point, the site of a dig during the Harvard Archaeological Mission to Ireland in the 1930s, where they were briefed on the archaeology of the area by Professor Peter Woodman from University College, Cork.  Professor Woodman is considered the eminent authority on the Mesolithic period in Ireland.

The port was also the scene of archaeological investigations prior to a major development to create additional traffic parking and marshalling areas in 1999/2000.  Specialist company, Archaeological Development Services, is working with Port of Larne and Environment & Heritage Service to progress the post-excavation analysis of this dig.  ADS archaeologist Cia McConway, who led this excavation, described her findings to the delegates, before they continued their field trip along the Coast Road, visiting other archaeological sites on the East Antrim coast including Ballygally, Glenarm and Carnlough
