Cruise Larne

St Patrick

St Patrick’s association with Ireland needs no explanation and offers many historical attractions.  Downpatrick, just an hour’s drive from Larne, is home to his tiny churches at Saul and Raholp and his final resting place, St Patrick’s Grave.  Armagh, just 1 hour 15 minutes from Larne is the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland and home to two Cathedrals dedicated to St Patrick.

Larne

Situated in County Antrim, the historical town of Larne offers a wealth of historical and cultural attractions which has interested visitors for years.  Its sea-faring history is evident throughout the town with numerous monuments depicting Larne through the ages.  The Chaine Memorial Tower was built in 1888 in memory of James Chaine whose vision for the harbour brought about significant changes and wealth to the town.  A visit to Chaine Park will bring you to the site of James Chaine’s burial place where it is said that he was buried in an upright position, dressed in his yachting attire, facing the sea which he so loved. visit www.larne.gov.uk for further information.

Larne played a significant part in the extensive 18^th Century emigration which saw many people leave the shores of Ireland to seek their fortunes in America.  This history is commemorated with a imposing statue in the town’s Curran Park.  The statue features a family group on their way to an emigrant ship, possibly the Friends Goodwill, the first emigrant ship to leave Larne in 1717.

The town’s role in emigration from Ireland has seen many American tourists visit Larne to retrace their family history.

Belfast

At a mere half hour drive from Larne, Belfast offers an abundance of art, culture, history and “craic.”  It would be impossible to mention all that Belfast has to offer in a few short paragraphs, but visitors are sure to discover the hidden secrets of the City.  The political history behind the walls of the City Hall, the modern world of arts and culture in the Waterfront Hall, the olde world atmosphere of the Grand Opera House, and unmistakable taste of a cool pint of Guinness in the Crown Bar are all within walking distance of each other, making a visit to the city an unmissable adventure.
