The Green Glens of Antrim

County Antrim is home to nine famous glens which inspired the famous song “The Green Glens of Antrim". Glenarm, Glencloy, Glenariff, Glenballyemon, Glencorp, Glanaan, Glendun, Glenshesk and Glentaisie are entwined with rich history and tradition, breath-taking natural beauty and a enthralling mix of myths and legends, tales of giants and fairies and a wealth of folklore and “craic”.

It is impossible to describe all the individual delights of each of the nine glens so we’ve chosen to highlight Waterfoot.

Castles of Antrim

County Antrim is home to three spectacular castles.

Dating back to 1180, Carrickfergus Castle is one of the best-preserved Norman castles in Ireland.  A striking feature of the landscape from land, sea and air, Carrickfergus Castle greets all visitors with its strength and menace.  It represents over 800 years of military might.  Besieged in turn by the Scots, Irish, English and French, the Castle saw action right up to World War II!

There has been a castle in Glenarm since the days of John Bisset who was expelled from Scotland in 1242 for murdering a rival during a tournament.  He promised to do penance by a pilgrimage to the Holy Land but instead he acquired land between Larne and Ballycastle and made Glenarm his capital.  Castle Turrets have been a feature of Glenarm since and although the castle been through many trials and tribulations which have seen it burned down and rebuilt, it is still a lived in Castle and very much home to the existing owner, Viscount Dunluce, the 14th Earl of Antrim.

Dunluce Castle is a late 17th century castle, dramatically sited on a headland dropping sheer into the sea on the north Antrim Coast.  Indeed, so sheer was the drop, legend has it that at one time the kitchen fell into the sea while the kitchen staff were preparing dinner!  Sadly, it now stands in ruins but it creates an exciting image of danger and adventure which is backed up by its very colourful history.
