With attacks on the elderly in their own homes becoming increasingly more common, a unique initiative launched by the Port of Larne and the Larne Community Policing Team will ensure that residents in the town will feel a lot safer in their own homes.
The Vulnerable Persons Scheme has been set up through which the PSNI will supply a number of security features for the homes of eligible residents. The Port of Larne has agreed to release a number of their staff from their normal duties in order to install the items free-of-charge and as quickly as possible.
Superintendent Tom Haylett comments: "It is widely reported that attacks on the elderly in their own homes is on the increase. To try to address this, the Larne Community Policing Team have joined forces with the Port of Larne in this unique initiative. The PSNI will supply a range of security features but we were concerned that many residents receiving them would be unable to fit them, thereby rendering them useless. The Port of Larne have stepped in to supply the manpower which will ensure that the security features supplied will actually be installed."
Mr Alastair Gardiner, Managing Director, Port of Larne adds: "The Port of Larne is committed to supporting the local community. The Vulnerable Persons Scheme is an excellent initiative and the Port of Larne is delighted to support it a practical way by supplying the manpower to ensure that full use of the security features will be gained."
One local resident explained: "I am very pleased to receive the various security items provided by the PSNI. As an elderly person, I would have had difficulty fitting them myself and so I would like to thank the Port of Larne for sending one of their workers to fit them. I will definitely feel safer now."
